The Circus of Vices and Virtues 2003

The Circus is a seven-act, semi-narrative circus based on the medieval vices and virtues. Using acrobats, aerialists, stiltwalkers, clowns, DJ beats, and other elements, it brings to life the surreal imagery of the series of prints on this theme created by painter and draftsman Pieter Bruegel in 16th century Flanders. The production transplants Bruegel’s mordant commentary on public moralism into contemporary American society.

Acts Included:

Envy: three dolls, suspended by harnesses and pulleys and perched atop old-fashioned circus pedestals, are eternally on show--condemned to repeat the same dance until they run out of juice. But when the infighting begins, sparks begin to fly-and so do they.
Sloth: a couch potato enamored with soap opera stars, game show hosts and Blind Date contestants finds acrobatic romance in a sweet young goblin her broken television spits out--but is it really love? And what's that big hump on her back? And why can she only slither--and what's that secretion--
Pride: an eager clown has been hired in a supersized corporate law firm. Eager to please, she perfects the tasks assigned her with verve & dedication. Her reward? Frequent promotion-- with ferocious results!

The Circus of Vices & Virtues 2003 was made possible by a grant from the Greater New York Arts Development Fund, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council.
